Sorry about the noise… :(

Over the next 3 days, (Monday, Mar. 30th – Wednesday, Apr. 1st) there will be light electricians changing lights on the Ground Floor of the OISE library  from 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.–they have a mobile ladder that makes the same sound as trucks when they back up. The noise level cannot be lowered.  We apologize for the disruption to the quiet.  Please remember that there are 4 floors in the library and there will be quiet areas on each of the other floors.

New Titles in the Curriculum Resources Collection!

Take a look at some of our new acquisitions at the OISE Library! Here are a few from our Curriculum Resources Collection.

The art treasure hunt : I spy with my little eye /The Art Treasure Hunt: I Spy with My Little Eye

By Doris Kutschbach. This fantastic book offers a unique interpretation of the traditional “I Spy with My Little Eye” game. Search for design details such as animals, keys, or colour patterns, in 21 reprinted artworks by famous artists. The picture puzzle book is an engaging way to introduce children to the diverse world of art, and the subjective experience of what determines whether something is art.

Young Children as Artists: Art and Design in the Early Years and Key Stage 1

We have also acquired a volume on cultivating the creativity of young children. Suzy Tutchell, Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of Winchester, explores how to design, develop and support an artistic environment for young children. The book includes practical advice and suggestions for developing skills for positive engagements between adults and children, understanding and analyzing child involvement in art, and more.

The Tree That Time Built: a celebration of nature, science, and imagination

A different form of art, this curriculum resource consists of works by poets asking some of the same questions as scientists, questions about the living things in the world, where they come from, and how we fit in all of them. While scientists turn to experiments to answer these questions, these poets turn their questions into works of art.

Peacebuilding Toolkit for Educators: Middle School and High School Editions

Two other curriculum resources that have been acquired by the OISE Library are the Peacebuilding Toolkit for Educators: Middle School Edition, and the Peacebuilding Toolkit for Educators: High School Edition. These two books, published by the United States Institute of Peace, were designed to help prepare the next generation of peacebuilders, encompassing interactive peacebuilding lessons, themes, and skills, for students ages 11-18.

If you’re looking for some guidance on searching our Curriculum Resources, check out our research guide here.

As a reminder, Curriculum Resources are only available to be borrowed by current OISE students, faculty, and staff; CTEP students; and OISE Alumni Readers. However, everyone is welcome to take a look at our resources. The Curriculum Resources Collection is located on the third floor of the library, and our New Acquisitions can be found on the Ground Floor.

Featured Activity Kit: Canadian Rainbow Food Clings

OISE Library has acquired a bilingual Rainbow Food Cling kit to help guide your students into healthy eating practices. The rainbow food charts is a versatile nutrition teaching tool. Cling pictures of food to a large rainbow food chart to describe the different food groups and portion seizes, using 49 reusable food clings, or have your students make up their own meals by sticking food pictures to two place mats, and evaluate the pros and cons of each to determine the healthiest meal!

You can find a larger image of the Rainbow Food Clings in the OISE Library K-12 Manipulatives Database. The database is designed to help OISE students discover our hands-on learning resources in specific subject areas, such as this activity kit found in “Health & Physical Education: Healthy Living.” You can also view the activity kit in person at OISE Library by visiting the Ground Floor coffee table, next to the Service Desk.

OISE Library Hosts Therapy Dogs for Student Stress Relief

On Monday, March 9th, the OISE Library hosted Charlie and Cinnamon, two St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs, to provide students with a welcome study break.

Our first visit with the therapy dogs went very well! Charlie, Cinnamon and their handlers started in the library and then travelled throughout the OISE building to visit with students. It was easy to spot where the therapy dogs had been because they left a very detectable trail of smiling faces 🙂

Similar visits have been implemented across all three University of Toronto campuses and we were very pleased to arrange a visit to OISE as well. The reason for inviting the dogs (or other animals) is that they have been shown to reduce stress and anxiety in general.

All of us at the library felt that the therapy dogs visits would be a great way to enhance the student experience at OISE.

The OISE Library looks forward to our next St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog visit on Wednesday, April 15th from noon until 1:30 p.m.
