Cell phones and beverages in the OISE Library?!

It’s true!  Cell phones and covered beverages are permitted in the OISE Library.

What about food?

We ask that you please respect our “no food” policy as food attracts rodents and other vermin (and yes, unfortunately, there have been recent mouse sightings in the Library!)

Looking for a place to eat? Try the lobby of the OISE building or the newly-renovated lounge on the 5th floor of the OISE building — there’s even a microwave!

Why allow cell phones in the Library?

As the majority of our patrons currently own mobile devices, it would be extremely difficult (if not impossible) for library staff to enforce such a rule.  More importantly, we recognize that patrons use their cell phones not only to talk, but also for a variety of other reasons, including searching the library catalogue and conducting other research.  To that end, the University of Toronto Libraries has created a mobile app (http://m.library.utoronto.ca/).

While cell phone use is permitted in the Library, we ask that you respect our noise policy as a courtesy to other patrons.  Signs posted throughout the Library indicate whether areas have been designated as quiet study spaces (where no talking is permitted), quiet conversation spaces (whispering is fine), and activity spaces (where talking in a “normal” speaking voice is permitted).
