New OISE Book Display: Let’s Stop Bullying!

One of the most chronic problems in schools is bullying. Students, teachers, parents, and whole communities have to take serious notice and try to stop bullying in the classroom. OISE offers many resources to help teachers prevent bullying and deal with both the bullied and the bullies.

OISE’s Curriculum Resources offer teachers ways to deal with bullies in the classroom. Bullying prevention programs can be installed in the classroom to try to stop bullying. Real Life Bully Prevention for Real Kids, and A Kit Bag for Promoting Positive Behaviour in the Classroom offer ideas for hands on activities in lesson plans. Included in the display is an example of a kit here at OISE entitled Steps to Respect: A Bullying Prevention Program that includes a teacher’s guide, student lessons, handouts, posters, transparencies, and a literature unit. Also included in the display are examples of policy implementation at the school and school board level: Bulling Prevention for Schools, Bullying Prevention and Intervention, and No Place for Bullying: Leadership for Schools that Care for Every Student to name a few.

Dealing with bullying through reading is also an option for teachers according to Confronting Bullying: Literacy as a Tool for Character Education and Bullying Hurts: Teaching Kindness Through Read Alouds and Guided Conversations. OISE offers  fiction options that can help students cope with and learn about bullying: The Nine Lives of Travis Keating, Egghead, poems in The Bully, The Bullied and the Bystander, The Brave, and My Secret Bully are examples.

Cyber- bullying is also a hot topic issue, as it is a fairly new venue for students to send and/or receive hurtful messages.  Research on the subject includes School Climate 2.0, Truths and Myths of Cyber-Bullying, and Cyber Kids, Cyber Bullying and Cyber Balance.

Every resource on display can be borrowed! Check out this display on the main floor of the OISE library today!
