Let’s talk about homework

Students have no doubt spent countless hours trying to get homework finished the night before its due! While France may ban homework all together, the issue is still debated in Canada. At what grade should homework be assigned and how long should a student spend on homework a night? Our book display explores the pros and cons (or the +’s and –’s) of the homework debate with books drawn from the stacks, juvenile fiction and curriculum resources collections. Check out the display before it ends on November 13th.

Featured Kit: Magnetic Wand Activity Kit

Did you know that every magnet has a north and south pole? When a magnet is broken a north pole will appear at one end and a south pole at the other. Explore the principles of magnetism in your classroom with the Magnetic Wand Activity Kit (CR 538.07 M1962). This week’s featured kit contains magnets in a variety of shapes and sizes, non magnetic items, and a discovery guide filled with games and experiments. Set up a marble treasure hunt in a box of sand, or simply play with the forces of attraction and repulsion. Other suggested activities include making a compass, and seeing how many marbles can trail from one magnetic wand. The kit also contains the Moo Magnet Kit with additional magnets, an activity guide, and information on how magnets are used to prevent Hardware Disease in cows. Ages six and up will enjoy this creative kit, currently displayed on the coffee table near the Circulation Desk on the Ground Floor of the library. Check it out today!

Decolonization – Call for submissions

Decolonization: Indigeneity, Education & Society, is a new online, peer-reviewed, Open Access journal published at OISE.

The journal has put out its second call for submissions for a conceptual issue that focuses on definitions of “decolonization”. The editors write that “the purpose of this conceptual issue is to push the boundaries of decolonization theory and practice, while lending specificity to a term, concept, and vision that is too often taken-for-granted”.

Articles are to be submitted at www.decolonization.org no later than November 23rd, 2012. Selected articles will be published in the journal’s March 2013 issue.

And don’t forget to check out the newly released first issue here:
