Featured Activity Kit: K’NEX Space Exploration Set

imageThe meteor that recently passed through Russia’s skies provided a spectacular vision and an excellent opportunity to discuss all things space-related with students. The K’NEX Space Exploration set (CR 629.13 K74) is a great point of entry for conversations about the history of science, developments in rocketry and space exploration, and the influence of technology on history. This week’s featured activity kit allows students to build rockets and other models from space history such as the Apollo Lunar Lander and the Hubble Telescope.

The kit contains 1600 pieces and instructions for building 10 different models. Also included is an extensive Educator’s Guide with 10 lesson plans and reproducible student worksheets. The kit is currently displayed on the small table near the Circulation Desk on the Ground Floor of the Library.

New Titles!

Learn about different perspectives of education with these new titles at the OISE Library!

Social Media for Educators – If you are looking for a book that will provide a straightforward discussion about the pedagogical value of social media, this is it! This title is a down-to-earth resource that clearly demonstrates how social media can be used in the classroom. Social Media for Educators will explain how to use social media as a way to increase communication and interactivity with students, and to facilitate engaging learning activities. This is a great resource for educators who are still hesitant to incorporate social media in their courses due to fear that it will be distracting or too time consuming.

Perspectives on Play: Learning for Life This new title illustrates perspectives on play through observation notes, case studies, interviews, and discussions. Each chapter encourages educators to critically evaluate current research, and to reflect on ways to improve their own practice. The benefit of this resource is the various authors who have contributed. Each author brings their own perspective on the subject based on their rich experiences, and various settings: the classroom, the playground, the home, and the local community!

The Information Behavior of a New Generation: Digital natives, the Google generation, or generation M, are terms used to describe the children and youth of today. This is because they actively consume, and avidly produce digital information. Children and teens are using smartphones as communication tools, social networks as interaction venues, and virtual environments as playgrounds. This title provides research from a variety of disciplines that examines the significant change of information behaviour of children and youth. Contributors of this title come from backgrounds in educational psychology, computer sciences, education, and information studies. Essays include topics on models of information behaviour, cyber-bullying, gaming in virtual environment, learning labs, social networks, and intellectual disabilities.

These and other new books are all available on the New Acquisitions shelf on the ground floor of the library.
