Featured Activity Kit: Brain Pack

picture of featured activity kit: Brain PackWhere do emotions come from? How does hypnosis work? What is consciousness? This week’s featured activity kit is Brain Pack (CR 612.82 V237B), a book-like kit filled with creative pop-ups and innovative inserts that explore the structure and mysteries of the brain. Brain Pack includes a 3D model of the brain that highlights how information from the five senses is received and processed.

The kit is arranged like a mini science centre with pages set up as interactive exhibits. Have fun with optical illusions or use the quizzes to test your short-term memory. The kit can be used to illustrate evolutionary trends, scientific studies on intelligence and emotions, and brain development over the course of a lifetime. Brain Pack features puzzles, brain teasers, and other activities that can inspire students to explore questions about the brain. The audiocassette provides a tour of the pop-ups, and a list of references for further reading is also included.

The kit is currently displayed on the small table near the Circulation Desk on the Ground Floor of the library. Check it out today!

Please keep a close watch on your bags, purses, laptops, and other valuables while visiting the Library. Unfortunately, there have been thefts reported recently.  An individual has been stealing cash and cell phones from backpacks and purses while students have been working at the computers on the Ground Floor of the Library and then leaving the backpacks and purses behind. OISE’s security guards are doing their best to increase surveillance in this area, but please also be careful to not leave bags, purses, and other valuables unattended.

Featured Activity Kit: Canada J-I-N-G-O

photo of JingoHave some fun in the classroom with Canada J-I-N-G-O (C.R. 971 G864C), an educational bingo game that uses pictures rather than numbers to teach Canadian trivia. The game includes 30 player cards and 50 clue cards, as well as directions for game play and variations. Each square on the player cards shows the name and an image of a person, animal, activity, place, etc. The matching clue card show the name and image as well as three clues. To play, the leader draws the cards one at a time, reading one or more clues aloud from each card while players cover up the matching image on their card using pennies or squares of paper.  For younger learners, the leader can simply show the card to the group or read the name aloud.

With 30 player cards, this game can be played with the whole class as a way to reinforce knowledge of Canadian history, geography, and culture, and as a jumping off point for a class discussion of students’ experiences of Canadian places and activities.

Currently on display on the coffee table near the Circulation Desk on the Ground Floor of the Library.  Stop by and check it out!
