Chapter 2 of the book Educating Everybody’s Children, edited by Robert W. Cole, is a rich resource offering research based strategies to meet the needs of diverse students toward closing the achievement gap. Teachers make a difference and strengthen their practices by understanding the context and needs of all their students and addressing those needs by incorporating these practices in their classrooms. Directly facing our personal stereotypes begins to allow us to change our thinking and see our students from a different light, one that values them and chooses to build on what they know and bring to the classroom. The entire chapter is available for free here. While each focus is important, my favorite strategies are 2.5, 2.6, 2.10 and 2.17. What are your favorites?

Trabajé como orientadora escolar (2012), en una Institución Educativa con una diversidad de niños y de culturas,algunos estudiantes con dificultades de arraigo desplazados por el conflicto armado.Desde el primer periodo escolar se detecto alta tasa de deserción escolar,para dar solución al problema se realizo un programa de visitas domiciliarias a los padres de los niños que no asistían a clase para conocer los motivos por los cuales no llegaban a la clase,Una de las causa fue no se adaptaron al plantel por varias razones,se realizaron 117 domiciliarias,se integro a los padres de familia a la institución,se hicieron talleres de motivacíón al estudio,autoestima, valoración de cualidades,esfuerzo personal ,y solución de problemas para padres y niños . El resultado final fue que de 117 desertores reingresaron a la institución 91 niños los demás desertaron por motivos de seguridad(eran testigo protegido) .
