Are you an early years’ educator looking for new ways to have kindergarten children demonstrate literacy and math behaviours? We have a new lesson in our library that uses children’s names to explore graphing. It’s engaging and fun.
This lesson, by Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study Lab School teacher Norah L’Esperance, asks students to take a close look at the letters in their name. Each child matches, identifies and counts the letters in their name. Then, as a class, the students build a graph.
This lesson provides opportunities for teachers to observe many literacy skills, such as confidence in letter recognition and discussions about the letters. It also builds math skills, such as number sense and data management.
